London Buses route 66 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. The service is currently contracted to Arriva London.
History[]
Route 66 is a very long-standing route. It commenced operation on 14 October 1925 between Leytonstone (Green Man) and Romford Station. Leytonstone has always remained the western terminus of the route, although the eastern terminus has varied over the years. Route 66 began operation as a double deck route from Romford (later Hornchurch) Bus garage, although between 1972 and 1976 the route was operated by single deck vehicles.
On 18 July 1970, it withdrawn between Hornchurch station and Romford and diverted to Harold Wood station.
On 8 January 1972, it was converted to one man operation and on 9 May 1976 to double deck operation with Daimler Fleetlines.
On 4 September 1982, it was withdrawn between Harold Wood station and Romford.
Upon being put out to tender, the route passed to Country Bus & Coach's Debden garage on 4 August 1990. It was transferred to fellow Cowie Group company Grey-Green's Barking (DX) garage on 2 August 1997. It became an Arriva London route following Grey-Green being integrated in 1998.
On 6 September 2003, it passed to Blue Triangle with Plaxton Pointer 2 bodied Dennis Dart SLFs introduced.
On 4 September 2010, route 66 passed to Arriva Kent Thameside with new Alexander Dennis Enviro200 Darts from Grays (GY) garage.
On 30 August 2014, route 66 was converted to double deck using Wright Gemini 2 bodied VDL DB300s and Alexander ALX400 bodied Volvo B7TLs.
On 1 January 2016, the Arriva group restructured its bus operations, which included the transfer of route 66 from Arriva Kent Thameside.
On 2 September 2017, the route was retained by Arriva London.
